There are three types of people:
- Those who know who Louise Mensch is and follow her prognostications and predictions
- Those who know who Louise Mensch is and think she’s nuts
- Those who have no idea who Louise Mensch is
Those in the third group are the lucky ones.
If you’re one of those lucky bastards, let me explain. Mensch is a former member of the British Parliament (who sat both with the Tories and Labour), author, and blogger who now resides in the United States. She styles herself a journalist and her claim to fame was a scoop in November of 2016 in which she correctly reported that a FISA warrant was issued related to the FBI’s investigation of Russia’s ties to the campaign of Donald Trump. Since then, she’s gone off the rails.
Just today, she and fellow conspiracist slash travel photographer Claude Taylor posted to Mensch’s blog a short entry entitled “EXCLUSIVE: Judiciary Committee Considering Articles of Impeachment” that is filled with such total poppycock that it’s difficult to comprehend they actually believe any of it.
It begins…
Multiple sources close to the intelligence, justice and law enforcement communities say that the House Judiciary Committee is considering Articles of Impeachment against the President of the United States.
While it is technically true that articles of impeachment would begin in the House and could very well be considered by the Judiciary Committee, we would all know about it, it would not be a secret. It would literally be the biggest news of the year. Never mind that, to this point, House leadership has shown a shocking lack of interest in pursuing even a whisper of its oversight responsibility over Trump, since there are not currently banner headlines splashed across the front page of either the Washington Post or the New York Times’ websites, I’m fairly confident in saying it’s not actually happening.
The we get to the madness…
Sources further say that the Supreme Court notified Mr. Trump that the formal process of a case of impeachment against him was begun, before he departed the country on Air Force One. The notification was given, as part of the formal process of the matter, in order that Mr. Trump knew he was not able to use his powers of pardon against other suspects in Trump-Russia cases. Sources have confirmed that the Marshal of the Supreme Court spoke to Mr. Trump.
This is total horse shit. All of it. Or, perhaps that’s being too kind. This is the shit of whatever little beings eat horse shit. Literally nothing about this makes any sense.
First of all, the Supreme Court has nothing whatsoever to do with the drafting and adoption of impeachment articles. Nothing. The Chief Justice is involved in the Senate proceedings once impeachment has been approved by the House, but that’s it. The Court as a whole has zero role in the “formal process.” Therefore, they would not be notifying the president of anything.
Next up, the assertion that since this mythical impeachment process is about to begin, Trump is not allowed to pardon anyone involved. This is also straight-up moonshine. The Constitution says the president “shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.” That last bit, like a lot of the Constitution, is open to interpretation. Some say it means the president cannot pardon those who have been impeached while others say it means the president himself cannot be pardoned by his successor following his own impeachment, but nobody really knows since it’s never been decided by a court. Whatever the case, the president has pretty broad powers of pardon in cases of federal crime.
Back in 1992, President George H. W. Bush granted full pardons to six individuals involved in the illegal sale of arms to Iran in order to fund Nicaraguan rebels, a scandal that may have involved Bush himself. That’s the closest analog I can think of to this situation. In pardoning those around him, Bush neatly decapitated the independent prosecutor’s investigation and, perhaps, insulated himself from implication and eventual impeachment. So yes, if he was feeling especially imperial and full of himself (and when does he not?), Trump could pardon anyone he chose in or out of his administration, for any federal crime, charged or not, and there’s nothing anyone could do about it. He could even try and pardon himself since whether or not that’s possible has also never been decided in court.
Bottom line, there are only two possibilities with it comes to Mensch:
- She’s totally full of shit, making it all up just to see how far she can go.
- She has a source who is filling her with bullshit in the hopes she turns around and reports it.
Neither option is good. She’s either lying or being lied to and is too stupid to do even cursory research to know if what she’s being told is remotely possible.
We just came off an election cycle marked by a hostile foreign power’s use of ‘fake news’ to interfere with the outcome. Not only by spreading lies and wild disinformation among the right, but also trying to do it among the left. And now we have otherwise intelligent and logical people buying into the trope those like Mensch are pumping out.
KNOCK IT THE FUCK OFF.
If she was reporting tomorrow that sources close to the intelligence, justice and law enforcement communities were saying Trump was a lizard person from the planet Quark, would you believe her because that one time she got the details of a FISA warrant right? Of course not. But going on about what the Marshal of the Supreme Court is saying to the president is just as ridiculous.
Don’t let your burning hatred of Trump and an abiding desire to see him out on his ear consume your faculties for reason just like the same feelings for Obama did to those who still, to this day, believe the Clinton campaign ran a child sex ring from a pizza restaurant basement. We are not there yet, but it’s only been 120-some days since the man assumed office. Plenty of time for real crazy train ideas to come along.
